The Doctors Cancer Foundation became operational in
2003. The first grant was awarded in 2004 to the team from Cornell of Drs. Elinor Peerschke, Richard T. Silver and Babette
Weksler.
Our second grant was awarded in 2005 to Antonio Bedalov,
M.D., Ph.D. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for the use of epigenetic techniques that may lead to improved treatment
of breast cancer.
The Foundation awarded the third grant in 2006 to Dr. Daniela Basseres of the University
of North Carolina, for the best program for the preclinical or clinical use of genetic or epigenetic techniques that may lead
to improved treatment of lung cancer. She received an additional grant in 2007.
The
Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for the year 2007 was given to Dr. Elizabeth Martinez for genetic techniques
that have the potential to develop new agents for the treatment of lung cancer.
The
grant for the best program for the potential treatment of carcinoid cancer was awarded in 2007 to Dr. Herbert Chen of the
University of Wisconsin.
The winner of the Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for 2008
is Dr. David Frank for his work in targeting STAT3.
The winner of the Doctors Cancer Foundation
research grant for 2008 is Dr. Ravindra Majeti for his work in targeting Leukemic Stem Cell surface molecules with monoclonal
antibodies.
The winner of the Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for 2009 is Dr. Elena
Levantini of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for her work in targeting a critical molecule C/EBP.
The winner of the Doctors Cancer Foundation research grant for 2009 is Dr. Aldo M. Roccaro of the Dana-Farber
Cancer Institute for his work with microRNAs in the management of Multiple Myeloma.
The winner of the Doctors
Cancer Foundation research grant for 2010 is Dr. Paige Davies of the Oregon Health and Science Univeristy for her work
in determining how cancer cells spread to other parts of the body.'
The winner of the Doctors Cancer Foundation
research grant for 2011 is Ruben Carrasco for his work using anti CD 138 aptamer conjugates for targeted
therapy of Multiple Myeloma.
The winner of the Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for 2011 is
Dr. Hassan Lemjabbar-Alaoui for his work with Sulf2 inhibition and chemotherapeutic response of Non Small Cell Lung Cancer
