The Foundation is pleased to announce that Nolan Miller, the noted designer, has given a grant to the Foundation to support research for lung cancer. The winner of the $50,000 Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant in 2008 was Dr. David Frank of the Dana-Farber Cancer Center for his work on targeting STAT3. The winner of the $50,000 Doctors Cancer Foundation grant is Dr. Ravindra Majeti from Stanford University for his work in targeting human leukemic stem cell surface molecules with monoclonal antibodies. There will be a $50,000 grant in 2009 for the best genetic, epigenetic or immunologic program for the management of cancer. There is particular interest in striking at Cancer at its weakness, so ably discussed by Dr. Lawrence Brody in the New England Journal Sept 1, 2005. There is also strong interest in cancer stem cells. We are not wedded to these concepts however, and any useful project will get equal consideration. There will also be another $50,000 Nolan Miller grant specific for lung cancer research. Research grant applications should be organized as follows: Research Hypothesis Background and rationale Study objectives Study design Study population (if applicable) Criteria for evaluation Definition of response Analyses
Please make it as concise as possible, with a maximum of 10 pages, including references. The reviewers are physicians in practice and the application should be understandable by practicing physicians. The budget should be included but will not be part of the 10 page scientific limit. Please email the application to dcf@doctorscancerfoundation.org The deadline for the grant applications will be Jan 31, 2009. The winners will be chosen on or before April 15, 2009. The award will be presented at the annual fund raiser in May 2009.
