The Doctors Cancer Foundation became operational in 2003. The first grant was awarded in 2004 to the team from Cornell of Drs. Elinor Peerschke, Richard T. Silver and Babette Weksler. Our second grant was awarded in 2005 to Antonio Bedalov, M.D., Ph.D. of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for the use of epigenetic techniques that may lead to improved treatment of breast cancer.
The Foundation awarded the third grant in 2006 to Dr. Daniela Basseres of the University of North Carolina, for the best program for the preclinical or clinical use of genetic or epigenetic techniques that may lead to improved treatment of lung cancer. She received an additional grant in 2007. The Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for the year 2007 was given to Dr. Elizabeth Martinez for genetic techniques that have the potential to develop new agents for the treatment of lung cancer. The grant for the best program for the potential treatment of carcinoid cancer was awarded in 2007 to Dr. Herbert Chen of the University of Wisconsin. The winner of the Nolan Miller lung cancer research grant for 2008 is Dr. David Frank for his work in targeting STAT3. The winner of the Doctors Cancer Foundation research grant for 2008 is Dr. Ravindra Majeti for his work in targeting Leukemic Stem Cell surface molecules with monoclonal antibodies. The finalists included Drs. Sebahat Ocak, Elizabeth Martinez, Robert Lucito, Frederick Domann Sujatha Venkataraman, Frank McCormick and Daniela Matei. There were also many other fine grant applications that made picking the winner very difficult.
